Providence Commemoration Lab

A collaboration of the Providence Department of Art, Culture and Tourism and the Rhode Island Historical Society. Funded in part by the Mellon Foundation and the American Rescue Plan.

Prelude – Development (summer 2023-winter 2024)

  • ACT and RIHS sign partnership agreement
  • Partners hire Lab Director
  • Partners advertise Call for Artists

Phase I – Research (spring 2024)

  • Partners contract Artists
  • Instructors develop syllabus for “Seeing Monuments” course
  • Artists investigate sites and develop community engagement plans

Phase II – Engagement (summer 2024)

  • Artists engage members of the public
  • College Unbound offers “Seeing Monuments” course

Phase III – Design (fall 2024)

  • Artists work with key stakeholders to finalize design proposals

Phase IV – Permissions (winter/spring 2025)

Phase V – Manifestation (summer 2025)

  • Artists produce and/or install new commemorative works

Phase VI – Completion (fall 2025)
